Ben Stiller and John Lesher have come on board as executive producers for the short film “Extremist,” directed by Russian-American filmmaker Alexander Molochnikov. This poignant work is set to compete in the live-action short category at the 98th Academy Awards. Notably, the film features a talented Russian cast and crew, many of whom are currently in exile due to safety issues stemming from their artistic expressions.
“Extremist” is inspired by the true story of Sasha Skochilenko, an artist who faced imprisonment for seven years for replacing price tags with messages opposing the war. The film powerfully underscores the personal sacrifices involved in standing against oppression in an era marked by escalating censorship and authoritarianism.
Molochnikov, the director, along with cinematographer Mikhail Krichman, has assembled a creative team that includes producers Jean Chapiro and Forma Pro Film. The executive production team, alongside Stiller and Lesher, features notable figures such as Ramin Bahrani, Odessa Rae, Rick Schwartz, and Sheryl Crown.
The cast of “Extremist” comprises Viktoria Moroshnichenko, Tinatin Dalakishvili, Lilian Malkina, and Arthur Smolyaninov, who all bring depth to this compelling narrative.
The film premiered at the 2025 Telluride Film Festival, garnering critical acclaim and several accolades, including two BAFTA Student Film Awards, a Jury Prize at the 2025 New Hampshire Film Festival, and the National Board of Review’s 2025 NBR Student Grant.
Molochnikov emphasizes that the story of “Extremist” transcends national borders, highlighting that it represents the struggles of those in Russia who challenge the state’s policies. He calls attention to the subtle mechanisms of authoritarian power and urges audiences to uphold their principles in the face of adversity.
With its robust themes of free speech and artistic resistance, “Extremist” aims to resonate with audiences around the world. Stiller and Lesher concur that this film is crucial in showcasing the realities faced by dissenters and believe it is imperative for viewers globally to engage with this impactful cinematic experience.
