God Shammgod, a celebrated figure in basketball, has officially joined the Orlando Magic as their new assistant coach, according to reports from ESPN’s Shams Charania. Previously serving as a player development coach with the Dallas Mavericks, Shammgod has an impressive background that includes a storied playing career and impactful coaching roles.
Originating from New York City, Shammgod is perhaps best known for popularizing a unique crossover dribble move that bears his name. He played at La Salle Academy alongside notable players such as Ron Artest and Karim Shabazz. Shammgod’s talent earned him a spot as a McDonald’s All-American, where he notably scored nine points in that prestigious game. His basketball journey includes being an AAU teammate of the legendary Kobe Bryant.
After attending Providence College, where he averaged 10.3 points per game, Shammgod was selected in the second round of the NBA Draft by the Washington Wizards. However, his stint in the NBA was brief, as he played only 20 games. He continued his professional career in various countries, including China, Poland, and Saudi Arabia.
Shammgod’s coaching experience extends to his time at Providence and his previous role with the Mavericks, which seems to have paved the way for this new opportunity with the Magic. At 49 years old, Shammgod, formerly known as Shammgod Wells, brings a wealth of experience and skill to the Orlando staff.
This hiring is a positive step for the Orlando Magic as they look to enhance their coaching lineup and develop their players, potentially setting the stage for future success.
