Despite this promising turnaround, there is a sense that they have not yet realized their full potential. With the Eastern Conference presenting an open field this year, expectations were high for the Magic’s new trio, including key addition Desmond Bane. However, they still face a significant challenge in closing the gap with conference leaders like the Detroit Pistons.
To enhance their performance and capitalize on the current season, the Magic should consider increasing the involvement of rookie guard Jase Richardson. Selected with the No. 25 pick in the draft, Richardson is a product of Michigan State, known for his skill and versatility. Initially coming off the bench, he quickly made a name for himself by forcing his way into the starting lineup during college, showcasing impressive production that has translated to the professional level.
At 6-foot-2, Richardson is slightly undersized for the NBA but demonstrates the capability to play both guard positions effectively. While rookies often struggle with the transition to more intensive playing time, integrating him into the lineup sooner rather than later could be beneficial for his development and the team’s aspirations.
In his limited time on the court, Richardson has shown efficiency, averaging 3.7 points with a shooting percentage of 53% over 15 games, although he plays only 6.7 minutes per game. Impressively, he has made 47% of his attempts from beyond the arc while averaging just over one three-point shot per game.
Richardson has had standout performances, including a high of 18 points against Boston in late-November. He has demonstrated potential in scoring and playmaking, achieving double-digit minutes in three games, although his recent appearances have reverted to more limited time.
With his solid shooting, playmaking skills, and slashing ability, it is clear that Richardson is a key part of the Magic’s long-term strategy. While the urgency may not be as palpable if the team were contending for the top of the standings, the current phase of the season provides an opportune moment to evaluate and develop his talent further. By giving Richardson more opportunities, the Magic could foster a promising future as they navigate the rest of the season.
