ORLANDO, Fla. – Sunday afternoon saw a significant disruption at Orlando International Airport (MCO) when a fire alarm triggered the evacuation of the airport’s air traffic control tower. This prompted the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to implement an immediate ground stop, leaving thousands of travelers stranded during what is typically a busy travel weekend.

The incident occurred shortly after 4:00 PM, when the fire alarm sounded within the control tower. In accordance with safety protocols, air traffic controllers were forced to leave their posts for the safety of all involved. As a result, the FAA’s National Airspace System reported a ground stop due to a “tower evacuation because of a possible fire.”

With the inspection of the facility underway, all inbound flights were halted from landing, and departing flights were held at their respective gates. The backlog of passengers was notably frustrating, especially considering the timing during peak travel days.

According to data from FlightAware, the impact of the incident was significant, with 248 flights delayed and at least 33 flights canceled by Sunday evening. Airport authorities are working diligently to restore normal operations and ensure the safety of all travelers.

As the situation unfolds, travelers are advised to stay informed of flight updates and to prepare for potential delays as the airport manages the aftermath of this disruption.
