Baltimore Orioles third baseman Jordan Westburg is currently sidelined from spring training due to a right oblique injury sustained during the offseason, according to manager Craig Albernaz. The manager noted that Westburg’s participation is uncertain and hinted at the possibility of an additional elbow issue contributing to his absence.
“He’s just unable to participate right now,” Albernaz stated in a press briefing on Thursday. The manager emphasized the importance of a thorough evaluation by both the team’s medical staff and external specialists to formulate a clear plan for Westburg’s return. “We just want to make sure that we do our due diligence and make sure Jordan is in the best chance to play this year,” he added.
Westburg, who recently celebrated his 27th birthday, had a noteworthy performance last season, batting .265 with 17 home runs and 41 RBIs over 85 games. However, he faced challenges with injuries, including a left hamstring strain and a right ankle sprain. In the previous year, he also experienced some ups and downs, appearing in the All-Star Game before suffering a broken right hand due to a hit-by-pitch incident.
Compounding the Orioles’ challenges, they will also miss second baseman Jackson Holliday at the start of the season. Holliday recently underwent surgery to repair a broken hamate bone in his right hand.
As the team navigates these early-season injuries, faith in their medical team and a strategic recovery plan for their key players will be crucial. Fans remain hopeful that with proper care and attention, Westburg will return to contribute significantly to the Orioles’ lineup.
