Framber Valdez continues to stand out as the most promising option for the Baltimore Orioles in their quest for a top-tier starting pitcher. As the best available starter on the free-agent market, Valdez’s history is closely linked to Orioles’ General Manager Mike Elias. However, the team’s lack of urgency in signing him may indicate underlying concerns regarding Valdez’s profile at 32 years old.

Recently, the Orioles were reportedly interested in Ranger Suarez but lost out to the Boston Red Sox, and instead of turning to Valdez afterward, they have shown interest in the veteran Justin Verlander. However, with Verlander nearing retirement, he may be viewed as a secondary option if Valdez remains unattainable.

Jon Heyman of MLB Network provided insights into Zac Gallen’s free agency status, noting that the Orioles are among the teams looking at him, alongside the Arizona Diamondbacks and Chicago Cubs. While Gallen is a three-time National League Cy Young Award finalist, he too presents concerns similar to Valdez. Gallen declined a qualifying offer from the Diamondbacks, which means that signing him would cost the Orioles their third-highest draft pick, compounded by potential penalties regarding their spending pool.

Gallen’s performance has been deteriorating over the past three years, culminating in a troubling 2025 season with an ERA of 4.83 over 33 starts. This downward trajectory raises questions about whether he can be the immediate impact pitcher the Orioles need.

While a lower-risk deal for Gallen could be appealing, the Orioles should focus on making a strong investment in a frontline starter rather than opting for Gallen, who currently lacks the consistency expected of a top pitcher. Despite some character concerns regarding Valdez, the Orioles would be better served to pursue him rather than divert their attention toward Gallen, who may not be able to provide the caliber of performance that Valdez has demonstrated in recent seasons.

With the right moves, the Orioles can solidify their pitching rotation and enhance their competitiveness in the coming season.
