EUGENE — The Ducks of Oregon have officially entered a crucial phase in their season.
On Friday night, Oregon showcased their potential as national contenders with a decisive 31-10 victory over Michigan State. However, it’s worth noting that the Spartans are currently undergoing significant changes within their program, highlighting the challenges ahead for their coach, Jonathan Smith.
Following the win, Oregon’s coach Dan Lanning expressed his satisfaction, stating, “Finally, you guys can talk about it. We’re finally there.”
Now, the pivotal question arises: Are the Ducks prepared to face Ohio State next week? With Oregon climbing to No. 6 in the national rankings, they could potentially rise even higher, while Ohio State, pending their success in a matchup against Iowa, is expected to be ranked at least No. 3.
This upcoming game not only tests the current Ducks squad and their national championship aspirations but also evaluates Lanning’s development of the program over the past three years as he chose to build a foundation in Eugene rather than use it as a stepping stone, as many of his predecessors did.
A loss to the Buckeyes wouldn’t completely derail their ambitions; there is still a chance for a rematch in the Big Ten championship. However, a victory would significantly enhance Oregon’s credibility and validate their transition to the Big Ten.
While it is easy to overemphasize the importance of a single game, especially with a 12-team playoff format allowing teams to recover from one loss, the significance of this matchup cannot be overstated.
Ohio State boasts a formidable defense, allowing only 196.5 yards per game—a ranking second in the nation—while also scoring an impressive 48.5 points per game, which is fourth highest. Conversely, Oregon has excelled defensively, conceding only one offensive touchdown in their last two games, with that score coming when the game was already in hand.
Friday’s game emphasized the kinds of performances that define the Ducks since entering the Big Ten: effective run games paired with aggressive defensive play. Notably, when Michigan State made their way to the 2-yard line on their opening drive, defensive tackle Jamaree Caldwell disrupted a potential score by forcing a fumble, which was recovered by Jordan Burch, who also made a significant impact on defense with 2.5 sacks.
Oregon’s defense has proven effective even when their offense has struggled. They managed to take control against Michigan State and will need to elevate their performance even further against Ohio State.
Although Oregon had moments of vulnerability earlier in the season, narrowly defeating Idaho and Boise State, they have shown their capability in recent weeks, limiting their opponents to low scoring in games against Oregon State, UCLA, and Michigan State.
Now, as they prepare for their most significant challenge of the season, the Ducks will face a true test against Ohio State.
