Orange County Fair: New Leadership and Rising Costs Ahead of Summer Kickoff!

The Orange County Fair is set to kick off on July 18 and will continue through August 17, attracting an estimated 1 million visitors this summer. Expect higher admission and parking prices as recent trends indicate a steady increase in costs. Adult general admission is priced at $13 on weekdays and $15 on weekends, while seniors and children’s admission is $9 across the board. Parking fees have also climbed, now standing at $15 for a vehicle, marking a significant increase from the $10 charge from 2017 to 2022.

A notable change this year is the appointment of a new CEO, James Canfield, who began his role on July 1. Canfield comes from the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex in Alabama and is expected to bring valuable experience from his previous positions in various Southern California venues, including the Palm Springs Convention Center and the Pasadena Convention Center. Board Chair Nick Kovacevich expressed confidence in Canfield’s ability to manage the fair effectively and ensure a smooth experience for attendees.

In light of ongoing federal immigration enforcement actions, the OC Fair & Event Center will adhere to California’s SB 54, which restricts local cooperation with federal authorities regarding immigration. Communications Director Terry Moore emphasized the fair’s commitment to the safety and inclusivity of all attendees.

Despite the rising costs, the fairgrounds’ financial health has improved, holding over $67 million in reserves as of the end of 2022. However, a noted drop of about $15 million in the reserve balance last year has drawn attention.

With the fair’s opening day fast approaching, stakeholders are hopeful that the changes, both in leadership and policies, will foster a welcoming environment that encourages attendance from all community members. The fair provides not just entertainment but a chance for the local community to come together and celebrate local culture and creativity, making it a much-anticipated event of the summer season.
