Oprah’s Bold Call: Is Kamala Harris the Next President?

Oprah Winfrey took the stage on Day 3 of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, delivering a passionate endorsement for Vice President Kamala Harris. Winfrey, a renowned media figure, made her first appearance at a political convention, a notable moment coinciding with her return to the city where her television career began.

“We’re now so fired up, we can’t wait to leave here and do something, and what we’re gonna do is elect Kamala Harris as the next president of the United States,” Winfrey declared to an enthusiastic audience. She emphasized that “decency and respect are on the ballot in 2024” and expressed confidence that Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz would embody those values.

Winfrey spoke about the issues of freedom and the divisions within the country, reflecting on her experiences living in various states and facing racism and sexism throughout her life. Despite these challenges, she highlighted the compassion of Americans, stating, “These are the people who make me proud to say that I am an American.”

She praised the efforts of civil rights activists, including the late Congressman John Lewis and civil rights leader Tessie Prevost Williams, noting their contributions to social justice that paved the way for future generations, including Harris. Winfrey articulated the importance of teaching young people about the achievements of leaders like Harris, who is of Indian and Jamaican descent, envisioning her as the next president.

Winfrey’s endorsement is seen as a significant boost for Harris’s campaign. In the past, Winfrey’s political endorsements, including her support for Barack Obama in 2008, have demonstrated considerable influence, known as the “Oprah effect,” which reportedly translated to around 1 million votes for Obama.

Additionally, Winfrey has a history of supporting candidates who prioritize voter access, especially for Black women. In 2020, she founded OWN Your Vote to combat voter suppression and highlighted Harris’s historic candidacy, recalling her admiration for trailblazers like Maya Angelou.

Oprah Winfrey’s presence and powerful message at the DNC underscores her enduring impact on American political discourse.
