The Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, has strongly condemned a recent series of social media posts targeting two women Members of Parliament, labeling them as offensive, defamatory, and derogatory. In a statement released today, he expressed deep concern regarding the inappropriate language and unfounded allegations propagated by an individual online, calling the posts both troubling and irresponsible.
Seruiratu underscored the severity of the accusations, particularly those pertaining to criminal conduct and personal integrity, asserting that such claims, when baseless, can be damaging and possibly illegal. He made it clear that neither he nor the Parliamentary Opposition Chambers support any form of defamatory speech or gender-based abuse directed toward any Member of Parliament, regardless of their political affiliation.
The Opposition Leader highlighted the unique challenges that women in public office face, noting that they often suffer disproportionate scrutiny and harassment, especially on social media. He pointed out that these attacks not only diminish the individuals affected but also pose a threat to the integrity of public institutions and undermine efforts to encourage women’s participation in leadership roles.
In response to the harmful posts, Seruiratu has called for the individual responsible to retract their statements, issue a public apology, and refrain from making further defamatory remarks. While reaffirming the importance of freedom of expression, he maintained that this freedom should come with a sense of responsibility. Constructive criticism should never cross into personal attacks, defamation, or the spread of damaging misinformation.
Additionally, Seruiratu urged the public to engage in respectful dialogue, emphasizing the necessity for law enforcement to carry out their investigations without external interference or bias. He reiterated the Opposition’s dedication to fostering a political environment characterized by mutual respect, accountability, and adherence to the rule of law, while highlighting the need to create a safe space for all individuals serving in public office.
