OpenAI’s Groundbreaking Steps Towards Human-Level AI

OpenAI is recognized as a front-runner in the pursuit of human-level artificial intelligence and is reportedly four steps away from achieving this goal.

Recently, OpenAI has introduced a five-level system to monitor its progress in developing artificial general intelligence (AGI), shared with employees and set to be revealed to investors and outsiders. This system ranges from the existing conversational AI to AI capable of executing the workload of an entire organization.

According to an OpenAI spokesperson, the company is currently at the first level but is nearing the second level, which it defines as “Reasoners” – AI that can solve basic problems, comparable to a human with a doctorate but without tools. The third level, termed “Agents,” involves AI that can perform multiple tasks over several days for its user. The fourth level, “Innovators,” describes AI that can aid in developing new inventions.

Bloomberg reported that OpenAI executives presented a research project using GPT-4, demonstrating human-like reasoning skills. The levels were created by OpenAI leaders who may adjust them based on feedback from employees, investors, and the board.

In May, OpenAI disbanded its “Superalignment” team, which focused on addressing AI’s existential risks, redistributing its responsibilities to other research efforts within the company.
