Previously, between 2019 and 2023, OpenAI operated under a strict partnership with Microsoft, which provided all of its computing power as a part of their complex investment arrangement. This contract required OpenAI to source its computing needs exclusively from Microsoft unless explicitly permitted to engage with other providers.
In light of growing demands for computing resources, OpenAI raised concerns about meeting its needs solely through Microsoft. Consequently, over the last 18 months, Microsoft permitted the startup to forge separate agreements with other cloud service providers, signaling a shift in strategy that could benefit the broader AI ecosystem.
