OpenAI Makes Strides Towards Human-Level Artificial Intelligence

OpenAI is emerging as a frontrunner in the quest to attain human-level artificial intelligence, with the company reportedly just four steps away from achieving this goal.

The company has introduced a five-level system to monitor its progress toward artificial general intelligence (AGI), as shared with employees this week, according to an OpenAI spokesperson who spoke to Bloomberg. This system ranges from current conversational AI to AI capable of performing the same amount of work as an entire organization. OpenAI plans to disclose these levels to investors and the public.

Currently, OpenAI believes it is at the first level but is nearing level two. Level two, termed “Reasoners,” involves AI that can perform basic problem-solving at the level of a human with a doctorate, albeit without access to tools. The third level, “Agents,” refers to AI that can carry out various tasks for multiple days for its user. The fourth level, “Innovators,” signifies AI that can aid in creating new inventions.

Additionally, OpenAI showcased a research project utilizing GPT-4, which reportedly demonstrated human-like reasoning abilities. This information was provided by an anonymous source familiar with the situation, as reported by Bloomberg. OpenAI declined to offer further comments.

The system was developed by OpenAI executives and leaders, who are open to adjusting the levels based on feedback from employees, investors, and the company’s board.

In May, OpenAI disbanded its “Superalignment” team, which was focused on addressing AI’s existential risks. The responsibilities of this team have since been integrated into other research efforts within the organization.
