OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was seen driving a rare Swedish sports car this weekend, sparking envy among social media users and frustration from his former friend Elon Musk.
Altman, 39, who has a passion for cars, owns an impressive collection that includes a McLaren and a Koenigsegg Regera. During a business trip to Dubai in April, he and his husband, engineer Oliver Mulherin, even drove sports cars on a race track, as highlighted in a Wall Street Journal profile.
It was the Koenigsegg Regera that drew social media attention over the weekend. Joseph Velyan, a TikTok user and car enthusiast, initially posted a video of the luxury vehicle in April after spotting it in Napa.
“I’ve been into cars almost my whole life, and seeing a Koenigsegg was definitely a dream of mine — especially in public,” Velyan told Business Insider. “I go to car events and see some pretty rare cars often, but this is for sure the rarest one I’ve seen, and it caught my eye right away.”
Velyan had originally shared the footage on Instagram and TikTok in April but reuploaded the videos recently after identifying Altman as the driver.
The video was also shared on the platform X, formerly known as Twitter, by the account Tesla Owners of Silicon Valley.
“CEO @OpenAI driving one of the most expensive cars,” the account posted. “How did OpenAI become a for-profit business when it was a nonprofit?”
Shortly thereafter, Musk responded, “great question.” Earlier this year, Musk sued OpenAI, accusing Altman of straying from the company’s original nonprofit mission to advance human life, instead chasing profits. OpenAI dismissed Musk’s complaints as “frivolous.”
