OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was recently seen driving a rare Swedish sports car, drawing significant attention on social media and causing irritation for his former friend Elon Musk.
Altman, who is 39 years old, is known for his passion for cars and his collection includes prestigious brands like McLaren and Koenigsegg Regera. During a business trip to Dubai in April, he and his husband, engineer Oliver Mulherin, took sports cars for a spin around a race track, as highlighted in a Wall Street Journal profile.
His Koenigsegg Regera specifically gained social media attention over the weekend. Car enthusiast Joseph Velyan first captured and shared a video of the luxury car in April when he spotted it in Napa.
“I’ve been fascinated by cars almost all my life, and spotting a Koenigsegg in public was a dream come true,” Velyan told Business Insider. “I attend car events and see rare cars frequently, but this one stands out as the rarest.”
Velyan initially posted the footage of the Koenigsegg to his Instagram and TikTok accounts in April but reuploaded the videos recently after identifying Altman as the driver. The video was also shared on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“CEO @OpenAI driving one of the most expensive cars,” the Tesla Owners of Silicon Valley account commented. “How did OpenAI transition from a nonprofit to a for-profit business?”
Shortly after, Musk responded, calling it a “great question.” Earlier this year, Musk sued OpenAI, accusing Altman of veering from the company’s original nonprofit mission to prioritize profit. OpenAI has termed Musk’s complaints as “frivolous.”
