The Minister of Tourism for Samoa, Fata Ryan Schuster, has highlighted the critical importance of regional unity in preserving Pacific cultures and dignity within the rapidly evolving digital environment. His insights were shared during the opening ceremony of the Sarong and Talent Night for the 37th Miss Pacific Islands Pageant held at the Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa in Nadi.

Addressing esteemed guests, contestants, and dignitaries, Minister Schuster stated that the pageant transcends mere beauty; it functions as an essential regional platform that amplifies the collective voice of the Pacific, while also promoting leadership, advocacy, and community service.

Expressing gratitude as the event’s chairman, he welcomed participants from across the Pacific and emphasized the significance of celebrating Pacific identity, pride, and unity. The theme for this year’s contest, “One Pacific. One Voice: Standing Together for Online Safety,” resonates powerfully in today’s digital age.

Minister Schuster acknowledged the dual-edged nature of technology, which can foster connectivity and education but also poses risks to personal dignity, cultural integrity, and overall well-being. He called for a collective commitment to uphold core Pacific values of respect, community, and storytelling both online and offline, urging a united front against cyber harm and misinformation.

He reassured contestants that they should take pride in their roles as representatives of their nations and advocates for crucial regional issues. Encouraging them to embrace their opportunities with confidence and humility, he reiterated the importance of their participation.

In concluding his address, Minister Schuster expressed gratitude to the Government and people of Fiji, as well as to sponsors and organizers, for facilitating this esteemed event. He extended his best wishes to all contestants for a successful and memorable pageant experience, celebrating their shared culture and talents in a spirit of solidarity.

This event not only highlights the vibrant cultures of the Pacific but also fosters hope for a more connected and respectful online presence as representatives stand together against challenges that threaten these values.
