Fijian nationals face scrutiny after a recent incident involving an i-Taukei man who was arrested in Australia. This development sparked a strong reaction from Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs Lenora Qereqeretabua, who expressed her disappointment over the actions that tarnish Fiji’s reputation abroad. The 43-year-old individual was apprehended and charged with multiple offences in New South Wales, including wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and stalking, among others.
Minister Qereqeretabua emphasized that such incidents could undermine Fiji’s hard-earned diplomatic relationship with Australia and serve as a detrimental reflection of the Fijian community. “It’s disappointing to see that while we’ve worked so hard to build this relationship with another country, a few bad eggs can give us a bad name,” she stated, urging all Fijians overseas to respect their host countries’ laws, particularly in Australia, a nation that has offered many work opportunities through the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme.
The altercation reportedly took place outside a pub in Eveleigh, Sydney, following the Melbourne Cup, where two Australian men sustained injuries and required medical attention. This incident is not isolated, as it marks the second arrest of an i-Taukei individual in Australia for serious offences within a short period.
Similar sentiments were echoed in recent events within Fiji, where local authorities have stepped up initiatives to address crime, particularly involving foreign workers. In response to public safety concerns, law enforcement officials are actively investigating various incidents, including assaults against Australian airline crew members on New Year’s Day, highlighting the importance of ensuring community safety and upholding the law.
These recurring themes of accountability and community vigilance serve as reminders for all Fijians, both at home and abroad, about the significance of conduct that reflects positively on their country. As these situations unfold, it is hoped that the Fijian community can rise to the occasion, working together to foster a safer and more respectful environment for everyone, both locals and visitors alike.
