With the summer season in full swing and schools on break, both Omani nationals and expatriates are taking the opportunity to embark on international vacations. Travel agencies in Muscat have reported a notable surge in bookings, with family-friendly destinations such as Turkey, Thailand, Malaysia, the United Kingdom, and various European cities becoming increasingly popular.
Passenger traffic at Muscat International Airport has also seen a steady rise since May, particularly on weekends. Airport officials are encouraging travelers to ensure their documents are in order and to arrive early to accommodate the influx of flyers.
Oman Airports confirmed the increase in passenger numbers and highlighted that teams are working diligently to facilitate smooth operations and minimize delays. According to local travel consultants, this year’s advance bookings significantly surpass those of the previous year, as families plan trips earlier and favor destinations that promise cultural engagement and straightforward visa processes.
Turkey, the UK, and Southeast Asia are among the top picks for Omani families, as noted by travel advisor Ahlam al Busaidi. Meanwhile, expatriates are seizing the chance to visit their home countries, often combining their vacations with family reunions after prolonged periods apart. Suresh Nair, an Indian expatriate, expressed his excitement about visiting Kerala with his family, highlighting the joy of reconnecting with relatives after nearly three years.
However, the rise in travel enthusiasm comes with some concerns. Ticketing agents have reported a significant increase in airfares and accommodation prices, with some tickets seeing hikes of up to 30%. To navigate this, travel advisor Fatma al Lawati urged families to book their trips early and to be flexible with their travel dates. She highlighted the importance of checking passport validity and visa requirements to avoid last-minute complications.
The Ministry of Health has stepped in to support families traveling with children by issuing travel health guidelines. These include advice on packing appropriate clothing, preparing children for long journeys, and tips to mitigate ear discomfort during flights, such as breastfeeding or chewing gum. They also recommend maintaining regular sleep cycles to help ensure children are well-rested during travel.
As families gear up for their summer adventures, authorities and travel consultants are optimistic that with careful planning and communication, travelers can enjoy memorable experiences and cherished reunions.
