Olympics Shake-Up: Bronze Medal Reallocated After Controversial Ruling

In a recent announcement, the International Olympic Committee has stated that Jordan Chiles’ bronze medal from the women’s floor final will be reallocated to Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu. The decision comes after a ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport determined that Chiles’ inquiry regarding her difficulty score was submitted beyond the allowed timeframe.

Chiles, who is 23, will depart from the Paris competition having secured a gold medal with the U.S. women’s team. Both USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee released a joint statement affirming that their inquiry about the calculation of Chiles’ difficulty score was done in good faith, adhering to FIG rules for accurate scoring.

Initially finishing in fifth place with a score of 13.666, Chiles’ coach submitted an inquiry that increased her score to 13.766, elevating her position to third place. However, the inquiry was submitted four seconds late, prompting the arbitration court’s decision to favor Barbosu. As a result, Chiles’ original score was reinstated, and FIG confirmed that Barbosu will be recognized as the third-place finisher.

In the final standings, Brazilian gymnast Rebeca Andrade claimed the gold medal with a score of 14.166, while American Simone Biles earned the silver with a score of 14.133.
