The annual 5k Turkey Trot in Olivette, Missouri, has become a significant event for the community, raising an impressive $119,000 for the Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry since it began. This year marked the 11th edition of the event, which attracted over 2,000 participants—up from just 200 in its inaugural run, showcasing its incredible growth.
Mayor Missy Waldman shared how the event began with a simple conversation between two brothers. “It started out with a brother asking a brother, ‘What are you going to do, where are we going to race on Thanksgiving Day?’” Since then, it has transformed into a vibrant occasion that emphasizes community engagement and support.
Elizabeth Macanufo, the Development Director at Jewish Family Services (JFS), expressed her excitement about the record attendance this year. She noted that the growing participation not only raises necessary funds but also raises awareness of community needs. “Each year it grows and grows, which is great for us because that’s more support, more people who hear about the need for our community,” she said.
Participants, like brothers Jeremiah and De’Andre Butler, enjoyed the event as a way to start their Thanksgiving festivities on a positive note. “It’s a great warm-up for the day,” said Jeremiah, highlighting the fitness aspect before indulging in holiday meals. De’Andre added, “Got to get your body ready.”
Macanufo emphasized that the Turkey Trot serves more than just a fitness purpose; it fosters community spirit. “It’s so great to come together as a community, to get out, get some fresh air, see your friends and neighbors, and of course, to help a great cause,” she remarked.
Every dollar raised from the race is donated to the Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry, a critical resource for families in need. Megan Wilson, JFS Board President Elect, expressed gratitude for the event, underlining the ongoing problem of food shortages. Waldman reinforced the importance of the event, stating that helping families with nutritional needs allows them to allocate their limited resources to other essential expenses.
This year’s Turkey Trot not only provided a platform for fitness and fun but also strengthened the community’s commitment to supporting those in need. With awareness growing and participation expanding, the event promises to continue making a positive impact in the years to come, showcasing how collective efforts can enhance the well-being of the community.
