OXFORD, Miss— The Ole Miss women’s basketball team is making significant strides in the postseason, having clinched a convincing victory against Auburn with a score of 73-57 on Thursday night, paving their way to the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament. Head coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin, affectionately known as Coach Yo, has ignited enthusiasm around Team 51, showcasing their potential as they eye a deeper run this tournament season. Their next challenge comes against Vanderbilt on Friday evening.

Coach Yo is beaming with confidence in her squad as they navigate this crucial part of the season, even after a recent loss to Texas A&M. Her unwavering faith in the team’s ability to rise to the occasion has been apparent. The fervor and determination that define Coach Yo’s approach enter a heightened state as the postseason approaches.

Looking back on her impressive coaching career, Coach McPhee-McCuin initially took the helm at Jacksonville University from 2013 to 2018, where she led the Dolphins to a commendable 94-63 record and secured the program’s first-ever ASUN Conference Championship in 2016. She joined Ole Miss in 2018 and has been instrumental in revitalizing their women’s basketball program. The Rebels made their first NCAA tournament appearance in 15 years under her leadership in 2022, and since then, they have steadily built upon that foundation.

In 2023, Ole Miss surpassed expectations by defeating a number one seed, Stanford, during the NCAA tournament, showcasing a defensive prowess that took many by surprise, eventually reaching the Sweet 16. This year, the Rebels continued to solidify their status in women’s college basketball, with another impressive run that featured a victory over Baylor before falling to the two-seed UCLA.

The current iteration of Team 51 arguably possesses the strongest offensive capabilities seen during Coach Yo’s tenure. With an average of 75.32 points, 40.4 rebounds, and 14.1 assists per game, they represent one of the most formidable offensive units Coach Yo has cultivated. The emphasis on defense remains paramount, characteristic of her coaching philosophy. Even with some fluctuations in statistics, the team continues to maintain solid defensive numbers.

Key players have emerged this season, such as senior Cotie McMahon, who is averaging 19.8 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game. She earned recognition as a 1st Team All-SEC selection and was named SEC Newcomer of the Year. Other significant contributors include Christeen Iwuala, who excels in the paint, and Latasha Lattimore, who has established herself as a strong shot-blocker and consistent scorer. Although Sira Thienou is currently sidelined, her contributions in steals and scoring underscored her value to the team’s defense.

The depth of Team 51 is perhaps more pronounced than in any of her previous squads, providing Coach Yo with diverse options in terms of player rotation. As she continues to elevate the program’s standards, Ole Miss is prepared for another challenging yet promising tournament run. With their collective talent and tenacity, the Rebels are ready to make a significant impact in the SEC Tournament and beyond.

The matchup against Vanderbilt is set for Friday at 5 p.m. CT on the SEC Network, as Ole Miss aims to build on their recent success and continue their quest for postseason glory.
