Kristin Scott Thomas and Scarlett Johansson are reconnecting on screen nearly three decades after their first collaboration in the acclaimed film The Horse Whisperer. The duo stars in Scott Thomas’ directorial debut, My Mother’s Wedding, where they portray a mother-daughter relationship once again.
The film, set to be released in theaters on August 8, showcases Johansson as a Royal Navy captain who reunites with her two sisters, played by Sienna Miller and Emily Beecham, for their mother’s third wedding. Scott Thomas, who also co-wrote the film with her husband John Micklethwait, expressed her joy at casting Johansson, who she referred to as an “extraordinary actress.”
In reminiscing about their earlier project, Scott Thomas, now 65, reflected on how, despite losing touch over the years, their bond was reignited through this new film. “It’s very easy to lose touch when you are a film actor because you go from one project to the next,” she noted.
The emotional depth of My Mother’s Wedding draws from Scott Thomas’ personal experiences with loss, as she lost both her father and stepfather, who were Royal Navy pilots, during her childhood. This aspect added layers to the characters and informed the performances of her cast, emphasizing the familial theme of the story.
Johansson, 40, was quick to respond positively to the screenplay, indicating a strong connection to the narrative. “I literally gave it to her, and 24 hours later she said yes because she was very moved by the story,” Scott Thomas shared.
This reunion not only marks a significant moment in their careers but also highlights the enduring relationships built through the filmmaking process. The film is generating anticipation for its release and illustrates the powerful stories that arise from personal narratives.
