Chris Olave has emerged as the top wide receiver for the New Orleans Saints as he continues to build on his NFL experience since being drafted in 2022. In his first two seasons, Olave demonstrated his playmaking ability, achieving back-to-back seasons with over 1,000 receiving yards, but much of that time was spent in the shadow of veteran Michael Thomas, a previous NFC Offensive Player of the Year.

With Thomas’s release in March, it became evident that the Saints would look to Olave as a primary offensive target moving forward. Now at 24 years old and entering his third season without Thomas, Olave is eager to be trusted in all facets of the game.

During the offseason, he focused on improving his blocking to become a more complete receiver. Olave worked on his strength in the weight room and reviewed blocking footage, acknowledging that he needed to enhance his performance in this area.

“I just want to be a receiver on every play,” Olave said, explaining his desire to contribute even on running plays. As the Saints prepare to face the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football, Olave’s ability to make big plays will be vital.

Quarterback Derek Carr noted the change in Olave’s mindset, stating, “He’s in a position where every ball is his.” Olave showcased his skills in a recent game against the Philadelphia Eagles, securing a crucial touchdown despite the team’s eventual loss.

Originally selected as the 11th overall pick in the 2022 draft from Ohio State, Olave is beginning to fulfill the potential that was envisioned for him. After recording eight receptions for 87 yards against the Atlanta Falcons, he currently leads the Saints with 20 receptions for 265 yards and a touchdown this season.

His growth is also evident in his blocking, as demonstrated in his recent performances. Olave’s ability to contribute in the run game has been a key component of the Saints’ offensive strategy this year.

Under new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, the team’s scheme now requires receivers to take on more blocking responsibilities. Olave recognized that this was an area for improvement and committed to enhancing his blocking skills.

During training camp, Olave made a strong impression by participating fully and displaying a commitment to his physical development. His willingness to embrace these new responsibilities has not gone unnoticed by coaches and teammates.

As the Saints continue to adjust after Thomas’s departure, Olave has stepped into a leadership role. His work ethic and dedication are setting a new standard for his fellow receivers.

“I try to lead by example, work hard, and encourage others to follow,” Olave stated, emphasizing his resolve to establish himself as the team’s primary receiving target this season.
