Oklahoma Sooners Athletic Director Joe Castiglione Announces Retirement Plans

Oklahoma Sooners athletic director Joe Castiglione has announced his retirement, effective at the conclusion of the 2025-2026 academic year, as reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel. Castiglione has been with the Sooners since 1998 and has played a pivotal role in elevating the football program, most notably through the hiring of coach Bob Stoops.

In his final year, Castiglione will focus on facilitating a smooth transition for his successor, ensuring the university continues to thrive as it searches for a new athletic director. After stepping down, he will take on an emeritus role at the University of Oklahoma.

As one of the longest-serving athletic directors in the nation, Castiglione led an athletic department that celebrated 26 national championships, including a football national title and eight softball championships. He has been instrumental in guiding the Oklahoma Sooners into the evolving landscape of collegiate athletics, particularly as the program prepares for its upcoming transition to the Southeastern Conference (SEC).

An official announcement regarding Castiglione’s retirement will be made at a press conference scheduled for Tuesday, July 8, attended by Castiglione, University president Joseph Harroz, and OU Board of Regents chair Anita Holloway.
