NORMAN — The Oklahoma Sooners football team’s regular-season finale against LSU this Saturday will serve as a poignant farewell for several senior players, marking their final home game at the university. As the season winds down, attention turns to the contributions and journeys of these athletes, even as some may have eligibility left to extend their careers.
Key senior players include Jovantae Barnes, a running back from Las Vegas who has accumulated over 1,200 yards and 12 touchdowns during his time at OU. Despite a promising start, injuries have hindered Barnes throughout his career, limiting his appearances this season.
Wide receiver Deion Burks, who transferred from Purdue, has established himself as a crucial asset over the last two seasons, racking up 697 yards and five touchdowns. This year, he has remained healthy and played in all 11 games, showcasing his resilience after trying times with injuries.
Linebacker Kendal Daniels has made an impressive impact during his first season with the Sooners, playing the versatile Cheetah position and registering 42 tackles. Having previously spent four years at Oklahoma State, Daniels has seamlessly transitioned into the Oklahoma defense.
Cornerback Kendel Dolby’s journey has been tumultuous, marred by a significant injury last season. However, he made a notable return this season, even if he has faced challenges since. Offensive lineman Troy Everett, despite only participating in one game this year due to injury, continues to lend his leadership as a team captain.
On the defensive front, Gracen Halton has stood out, contributing greatly to a formidable defensive line with 27 tackles, including 3.5 sacks. Meanwhile, Marvin Jones Jr., a solid transfer addition, has bolstered the line with his strong performances throughout the season.
Other notable seniors include tight ends Jaren Kanak and Will Huggins, who have both contributed to the team’s offensive schemes, and receiver Keontez Lewis, whose promising start was interrupted by injury.
As the Sooners prepare to bid farewell to these seniors, their hard work and dedication reflect the spirit of the program. The upcoming match against LSU not only signifies a competitive challenge but also serves as a celebration of the contributions these athletes have made during their time at Oklahoma. With a mixture of farewell and anticipation, the Sooners look to finish the season strong and honor their outgoing players in a meaningful way.
