A highly anticipated sequel to the beloved game “Okami” is currently in development at Capcom, with the original game director, Hideki Kamiya, at the helm. This new project follows the trail set by the classic 2006 action-adventure title developed by Clover Studio, which has since closed.
Set in a fictionalized version of classical Japan, “Okami” utilized elements of Japanese mythology and folklore to narrate the tale of Amaterasu, the Shinto sun goddess who takes on the form of a majestic white wolf. Players step into Amaterasu’s paws, wielding the unique Celestial Brush game system that adds an artistic dimension to gameplay.
The sequel is a collaborative effort between three studios, including M-TWO, Machine Head Works, and Clovers—a studio that features members from the original game’s development team. Capcom reveals that the new installment will present “a new adventure in the same vein as ‘Okami,’” igniting excitement among fans. The announcement took place at the 2024 Game Awards, which also showcased other significant reveals such as a new title from Naughty Dog, “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet,” as well as Hazelight Studios’ upcoming game “Split Fiction” and a teaser for “Borderlands 4.” Notably, Geoff Keighley, the host of the Game Awards, mentioned that this sequel is slated for release after 2025.
