Edmonton Oilers general manager Stan Bowman is eager to resolve the future of star player Connor McDavid, whose contract extension has been a topic of speculation since he became eligible on July 1. Bowman recently shared insights during an interview with Bob Stauffer on CHED 880 Edmonton, expressing his anticipation for discussions with McDavid regarding a new long-term deal.
“He’s a huge part of everything we do here, and so I don’t have a timeline update, but I do expect to have some conversations with them soon and hopefully get that wrapped up,” Bowman stated. McDavid is entering the final year of his eight-year, $100 million contract, with unrestricted free agency on the horizon after next season.
While the stakes are high, Bowman emphasized the importance of allowing McDavid to influence the timing of the talks. “I’ve had really good conversations with Judd Moldaver (McDavid’s agent) since the season ended, and I’ve tried to give Connor his space, and I think that it’s important,” he explained. He expressed optimism about the ongoing discussions, highlighting a respectful approach to McDavid’s decisions regarding his future.
The Oilers, having reached the Stanley Cup Final in consecutive seasons but falling short against the Florida Panthers on both occasions, see McDavid as pivotal to their success. Last season, he led playoff scoring with 33 points and recorded an impressive 100 points during the regular season, marking the eighth time he has achieved this milestone in his ten-year career.
When asked about his priorities for signing an extension, McDavid’s focus remained clear, signalling his commitment to the team’s aspirations.
This hopeful narrative surrounding McDavid’s potential extension reflects both the Oilers’ ambition and the star player’s dedication to growing as a key player in the organization. As discussions progress, fans will no doubt remain optimistic about the future direction of both McDavid and the Oilers as they aim for championship glory.
