WALU Bay in Suva experienced significant disruptions yesterday following an oil leak at the Petro Oceania Fuels Terminal on Foster Road. The incident necessitated the closure of several businesses in the area, prompting safety evacuations for workers.
As the National Fire Authority (NFA) responded to the situation, key streets in Walu Bay, specifically Syria and Argo streets, were shut down until further notice. NFA crews worked diligently on-site to contain the spill and ensure public safety.
Authorities advised motorists and pedestrians to steer clear of the affected area and utilize alternative routes. The police established cordons, restricting access to Foster Road from Suva and at the roundabout leading to Reservoir Road. Traffic from Suva was redirected to Edinburgh Drive, while vehicles coming from Lami were instructed to use Reservoir Road instead.
The NFA reassured the community that they would provide updates regarding road openings as the situation developed. Meanwhile, an investigation into the cause of the fuel leak was underway. Joel Israel, acting chief executive officer of the NFA, stated that the situation was under control and indicated that further assessments and mitigation measures were in progress. He also confirmed that the National Disaster Management Office was informed of the leak and is actively monitoring the situation.
While incidents like this can cause concern, the swift actions of local authorities have ensured public safety and efficiency in addressing the leak.
