Shohei Ohtani is making progress in his recovery as he prepares to pitch for the Los Angeles Dodgers, although he still has some time before returning to the mound. During a recent throwing session on Tuesday, Ohtani notably threw breaking pitches for the first time, specifically sliders, while working from flat ground, as confirmed by manager Dave Roberts.
Previously, Ohtani had only been throwing fastballs and splitters to build strength without putting too much strain on his surgically repaired right elbow. Roberts communicated positive news about Ohtani’s progression, stating, “It is progressing,” although he was uncertain when Ohtani would move to throwing in the bullpen.
The intensity of Ohtani’s workouts has also ramped up, increasing from twelve pitches to fifty in these sessions. Notably, he has been simulating game situations by taking breaks to emulate leaving the mound and waiting in the dugout, which is crucial for game readiness.
While the Dodgers have not specified a return date for Ohtani’s pitching, it is optimistic to project that he could be back on the mound around the All-Star break in July. Roberts emphasized the anticipation surrounding Ohtani’s recovery, stating a desire for clarity on his timeline as they await advice from Ohtani’s rehabilitation team.
The Dodgers are in need of Ohtani’s pitching capabilities, considering that their current pitching staff has faced difficulties, ranking 11th in the National League and 23rd in Major League Baseball with a 4.22 ERA. Several key pitchers, including Tyler Glasnow, Blake Snell, and Roki Sasaki, as well as relievers Blake Treinen, Evan Phillips, and Kirby Yates, are sidelined due to injuries.
In the meantime, Ohtani continues to shine with his batting performance, boasting a .311 batting average with a .405 on-base percentage, 17 home runs (tied for the MLB lead), 31 RBIs, and 11 stolen bases in 222 plate appearances.
As Ohtani progresses in his recovery, the Dodgers and fans alike remain hopeful for his return to the pitcher’s mound, knowing he can significantly bolster the team’s performance as they navigate a challenging season.
