Ohtani’s Comeback: Can He Save the Dodgers’ Season?

Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani is poised for a potential return to pitching, with plans for his debut likely to take place during the critical upcoming series against their rivals, the San Diego Padres. Manager Dave Roberts confirmed that Ohtani is scheduled to participate in another simulated game in the coming days, which might serve as his final preparatory outing before stepping onto the mound in a game situation.

In a recent simulated game held at Petco Park, Ohtani showcased his abilities, throwing 44 pitches over three innings while demonstrating impressive control and velocity, reaching the mid- to upper-90s with his fastball. This marked Ohtani’s third time facing hitters, and his performance has fueled optimism within the Dodgers’ organization regarding his impending return.

The Dodgers have been grappling with significant injury challenges, having 14 pitchers on the injured list, including four critical starters: Blake Snell, Tony Gonsolin, Roki Sasaki, and Tyler Glasnow. Due to his unique two-way player status, Ohtani can be utilized as an additional pitcher, potentially working two to three innings before a piggyback starter takes over, thus aligning with the Dodgers’ current strategy.

Ohtani’s recovery is notable, as it comes nearly 22 months after undergoing a second surgery to repair his ulnar collateral ligament. Meanwhile, the outlook is less favorable for Sasaki, who has had to pause his throwing program due to recurring discomfort. After receiving a cortisone injection for his shoulder, the team has decided against further scans for now, emphasizing a cautious approach.

Dave Roberts highlighted the importance of careful management for both Ohtani and Sasaki in light of their health insights. The situation remains fluid, but there is a hopeful sense that both pitchers could contribute to the Dodgers as they navigate through a challenging season.

This positivity surrounding Ohtani’s comeback can serve as an encouraging sign for fans and a critical boost for the Dodgers as they aim for success despite their current adversities.
