Ohio University has terminated head coach Brian Smith for cause, citing violations of his contract that involved “serious professional misconduct” and actions detrimental to the University. The announcement, made on Wednesday, did not disclose specific details regarding Smith’s alleged misconduct.

Smith’s tenure as head coach began with promise as he led the Bobcats to an 8-4 record in his first regular season. However, he was placed on administrative leave on December 1 for undisclosed reasons. Following his termination, Ohio University’s defensive coordinator, John Hauser, has been appointed as interim coach, stepping in to lead the team in the upcoming Scooter’s Coffee Frisco Bowl against UNLV on December 23. The university has indicated that a search for a permanent head coach will commence immediately.

Brian Smith was previously promoted from offensive coordinator in December after Tim Albin departed for a position at Charlotte. He had a five-year contract extending through the 2029 season, which would have entitled him to approximately $2.5 million in remaining salary had he been dismissed without cause. Before his time at Ohio, the 45-year-old Smith had coaching stints at Washington State and Hawai’i, where he also played as an offensive lineman and long snapper from 1998 to 2001.

While the situation is undoubtedly challenging for the Bobcats, both the team and fans may find hope in the leadership of John Hauser, who now has a significant opportunity to demonstrate his capabilities in the upcoming bowl game. The transition may present a chance for renewed focus and determination as the program moves forward.
