Ohio State’s OC Search Heats Up After Hartline Exit; Is Chip Kelly in the Mix?

Ohio State University is experiencing a significant week, celebrating its first victory against Michigan since 2019 while preparing for its first Big Ten title since 2020. The excitement is further heightened by the recent news that wide receivers coach and offensive coordinator Brian Hartline has accepted the head coaching position at the University of South Florida.

Hartline’s departure, he has been part of the Buckeyes’ coaching staff since 2017, will leave a notable void in the team’s offensive strategy. Consequently, Ohio State is now actively searching for its next offensive coordinator to fill the role.

Among the potential candidates being considered, Chip Kelly’s name has surfaced. Bobby Carpenter, a former Ohio State linebacker, expressed skepticism regarding Kelly’s interest in returning to college football. On his show, Carpenter remarked, “I don’t think Chip wants to coach college football that much,” noting Kelly’s preferences for a coaching environment that eliminates the pressures of recruiting.

Chip Kelly previously joined Ohio State before the 2024 season after a brief tenure with the Buckeyes, which followed Bill O’Brien’s departure to become head coach at Boston College. During his time in Columbus, Kelly significantly impacted the team, leading them to a national championship victory in 2024. However, he left Ohio State to become the offensive coordinator for the Las Vegas Raiders. Recently, following the Raiders’ loss to the Cleveland Browns, the team and Kelly parted ways, leaving the door open for new opportunities.

While Kelly remains a name linked to the Ohio State position, there are indications that head coach Ryan Day might be inclined to explore other options. The Buckeyes could be looking to hire a candidate who is more committed to the long-term success of the program. Potential entrants could include candidates like Brian Daboll, who has a solid background in offensive strategies.

It is anticipated that the Buckeyes will not finalize any decisions regarding their offensive coordinator position until after the new year, adding an element of suspense to the coaching landscape. As they navigate this transition, Ohio State fans can stay hopeful that the program will find a suitable leader to guide their offense in the seasons to come.
