Ohio Football Elevates John Hauser’s Role: What This Means for the Team’s Future

Ohio Football has announced an important development in their coaching staff, with John Hauser being promoted to associate head coach while continuing his role as defensive coordinator. This decision was revealed by Head Coach Brian Smith on December 20.

Coach Smith praised Hauser’s contributions to the program, stating, “John is an excellent coach and this promotion reflects the positive impact he makes on our program.” He highlighted Hauser’s success in enhancing the defense throughout the years and his genuine concern for the student-athletes. Smith expressed gratitude for Hauser’s continued presence on the coaching staff.

Hauser joined Ohio in 2022 after an eight-season stint as co-defensive coordinator at Miami (Ohio). In 2023, he advanced to serve as the defensive passing game coordinator before taking over as defensive coordinator for the 2024 season. Under his guidance, Ohio’s defense excelled during the regular season, leading the Mid-American Conference (MAC) and ranking fifth nationally in rushing defense, with an impressive average of just 94.3 yards allowed per game. Additionally, the team allowed an average of only 17.46 points per game, placing them 11th in the nation.

Hauser’s defensive prowess was particularly evident during the 2024 MAC Championship, where Ohio defeated Miami in a commanding 38-3 victory, restricting their opponents to a mere three points—an unprecedented feat in MAC Championship history.

The previous season, 2023, also showcased the Bobcats’ strong defensive capabilities, ranking as the fourth-best total defense nationally. Notably, they held Power 5 team Iowa State to just seven points and set a new program record with five turnovers forced in their Myrtle Beach Bowl victory over Georgia Southern.

Before joining Ohio, Hauser gained valuable experience at Miami, The Citadel, Wayne State, Northern Illinois, and Wittenberg. A standout player himself, Hauser was a three-time all-conference selection and earned Division III All-American honors in 2002.

John Hauser lives in Athens with his wife, Seanna, and their four children, including a daughter, McKenna, and three sons, John Jr. (“JJ”) and twins, Jackson and Maria.

John Hauser’s promotion reflects not only his successful track record but also the bright future for Ohio Football as they continue to strengthen their team dynamics and performance on the field. With a solid foundation in place, the Bobcats are poised for continued success in the coming seasons.
