Navarro showcased his versatility by scoring two touchdowns on the ground and throwing for another two, helping propel the Bobcats (10-3) to their first MAC championship title since the game’s inception in 1997. This victory also served as retribution for their earlier 30-20 defeat to the RedHawks (8-5), who shared the regular-season MAC title with Ohio, each finishing with a 7-1 record.
Head coach Tim Albin praised the offensive strategy, calling it “a masterful game plan” and highlighted the efficiency of his team’s performance, indicating it was the best four quarters of football he had witnessed in his 36-year coaching career. The Bobcats’ offensive unit capitalized effectively, scoring touchdowns on every complete drive with the exception of two, which resulted in a field goal and a solitary punt late in the game.
Offensively, Navarro completed 20 of 27 passes for a total of 235 yards, surpassing 2,000 passing yards for the season, while also contributing 67 rushing yards. In contrast, the RedHawks struggled offensively, with quarterback Brett Gabbert managing just 127 passing yards and the team only mustering 62 rushing yards, resulting in them being outgained 467 to 189 yards.
After Miami opened the scoring with a 25-yard field goal from Dom Dzioban, Ohio showcased their offensive strength. Navarro scored on a 4-yard run following an 11-play, 75-yard drive, and then capped off a remarkable 18-play, 82-yard drive with another touchdown. This prolonged drive exemplified the Bobcats’ game plan and ability to control the tempo of the game.
To start the second half, Ohio continued their dominance, with Navarro connecting with Coleman Owen for a 25-yard touchdown pass, further solidifying their lead. Gianni Spetic added a notable 52-yard field goal, and Anthony Tyus III rounded out the scoring with a 21-yard rushing touchdown.
