Governor Mike DeWine, along with Lt. Governor Jim Tressel and Ohio BMV Registrar Charles Norman, recently announced a significant achievement for Ohio residents: the state has successfully saved more than 10 million trips to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) thanks to a series of technological upgrades. These enhancements allow for various transactions to be completed online, eliminating the need for in-person visits.
Governor DeWine emphasized the administration’s commitment to improving the customer experience at the BMV. He noted that, “We’ve put significant focus on using technology to save customers’ valuable time and cut down on congestion at BMV deputy registrar locations across the state.” This initiative reflects a broader effort since 2019 to modernize BMV services, making Ohio’s agency one of the most advanced in the country in terms of online service offerings.
Lt. Governor Tressel remarked on the importance of accessibility, stating, “No one enjoys waiting in long lines, and giving Ohioans the option to conduct more business online reduces wait times for those who do visit the BMV in person.” Innovations like online license and ID renewals, which have already benefited over 608,000 Ohioans, and self-service kiosks, are at the forefront of this transformation.
Additionally, the BMV has expanded its services to include online renewals for eligible commercial driver’s license (CDL) holders, allowing for a seamless renewal process. Other online options, such as ordering temporary tags and renewing vehicle registrations through OPLATES, have also contributed to the drastic reduction in physical visits to BMV locations.
The Get In Line, Online service, introduced in 2019, further enhances convenience by allowing customers to check in from home and minimize waiting time on site. Since its implementation, this service has saved Ohioans over 812,000 hours of waiting time in offices.
This modernization effort not only streamlines processes but also reflects an ongoing commitment to making government services more efficient and user-friendly for Ohioans.
