ODPP November Crime Statistics: Arson Spike Sparks Public Safety Concerns

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has published its November statistics, revealing a concerning rise in serious crimes, particularly arson. The report documents various offences including murder, aggravated robbery, burglary, theft, assault, and criminal intimidation, reflecting ongoing challenges in community safety.

In total, 19 indictments were submitted to the High Court, comprising 31 counts of non-sexual crimes. Notably, six of these charges were related to arson incidents. One significant case involved a 35-year-old man accused of igniting fires at the residences of two women aged 65 and 42 after a dispute. Another troubling case featured a 45-year-old man allegedly setting fire to the belongings of both a 15-year-old and a 35-year-old individual.

Additionally, two younger individuals, aged 27 and 18, face serious charges including arson, aggravated burglary, and theft after breaking into Lakeba Post Office, where they stole cash and other items, then proceeded to set the building ablaze. Another case involved a 22-year-old man facing two counts of arson; however, proceedings were discontinued due to a lack of evidence.

Murder charges included a 32-year-old man accused of killing his 52-year-old partner and a 44-year-old former corrections officer charged with the murder of his 38-year-old partner. Assault cases were also highlighted, with a 31-year-old man facing charges for inflicting bodily harm on a 19-year-old woman and a 27-year-old allegedly causing grievous bodily harm to his 18-year-old partner with a piece of wood.

The report also included incidents of aggravated robbery, burglary, and theft, with a specific mention of a 74-year-old man charged with criminal intimidation for allegedly threatening his daughter-in-law with a cane knife. Multiple reports of robbery and burglary indicated that cash and other items were stolen from homes, shops, and streets.

The statistics underscore significant public safety concerns, with the ODPP noting that two cases were halted due to insufficient evidence or unavailability of witnesses. Despite these troubling developments, it is essential for communities to remain resilient and engaged in promoting safety and support for one another.
