Flash floods in Odesa, Ukraine, have resulted in the tragic loss of nine lives, including a family of five who were trapped in their home as floodwaters rapidly engulfed the area. As torrential rains continued to fall, local emergency services reported that hundreds of people required rescue, while thousands were left without electricity. Responders have successfully rescued approximately 362 individuals and are actively working to pump water out of affected buildings.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called the situation horrific, confirming the heartbreaking detail that a child is among the deceased and that there is an ongoing search for one additional person. Maryna Averina, a spokesperson for the regional emergency service, revealed that the family perished in a lower ground flat that was overwhelmed by the floodwaters.
Governor Oleh Kiper noted that the relentless rainfall has persisted for a second day, exacerbating the flooding situation and leading to widespread power outages, property destruction, and downed trees. More than 500 emergency workers are currently engaged in rescue operations, with Kiper stating that 42,000 residents across 32 communities are still without power.
