Fiji Champions Ocean of Peace at UNGA80

Ocean of Peace: Fiji’s Push for Pacific Unity at UNGA80

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is actively participating in the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80) in New York, with a strong emphasis on Fiji’s ongoing commitment to global advocacy in key areas such as peace, climate action, and multilateral cooperation. This session is particularly important for Fiji and its Pacific neighbors due to Rabuka’s focus on advancing the “Ocean of Peace” vision. This initiative advocates for the Pacific region as free from geopolitical conflicts, stressing unity and responsible management of ocean resources.

In a statement from the Fijian Government, Rabuka underlined the significance of the assembly as a platform for the Pacific’s collective voice, stating, “Our vision of the Pacific as an ‘Ocean of Peace’ is more relevant now than ever, as we face increasing geopolitical pressures and worsening climate impacts.” Rabuka first introduced this concept at UNGA78 in 2023, and it has since garnered support from other Pacific leaders.

Joining Rabuka at UNGA80 are key figures including the Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Mosese Bulitavu, and other senior officials. The assembly’s general debate, from September 23 to 29, provides a vital forum for the 193 member states to collaboratively address major international issues.

Rabuka’s leadership in advocating for the “Ocean of Peace” aligns with the partnership between the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat and the Fijian Government. Their collective strategy focuses on peace, security, and the sustainable development of the Pacific region. Through these initiatives, Fiji is further solidifying its leadership role in efforts to safeguard the ocean and promote a tranquil environment.

Through these diplomatic engagements, Fiji is not only strengthening its presence in the international community but also reinforcing its commitment to peaceful coexistence and environmental stewardship, extending its influence across the Pacific and beyond.
