A recent report from TMZ has stirred renewed interest in the ongoing saga surrounding O.J. Simpson’s infamous past, particularly involving the arrest of Simpson’s former bodyguard in Minnesota. This bodyguard, Iroc Avelli, claimed he possessed a thumb drive that allegedly contained a recording of Simpson confessing to the murders of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and Ronald Goldman.
On Tuesday, the Bloomington Police Department (BPD) addressed the sensational claims, clarifying the details surrounding the thumb drives. They confirmed that Avelli was arrested on assault charges in March 2022, and during their investigation, several items, including a backpack with thumb drives, were collected.
Fast forward to June 2024, and it was reported that detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department reached out to BPD. They were informed that Avelli and his attorney alleged the thumb drives contained a recording of Simpson’s confession. Avelli even pursued legal action to retrieve the backpack and thumb drives, but a judge rejected his request.
In pursuit of clarity, the BPD conducted a forensic analysis of the drives after obtaining a search warrant in July. Their findings, however, confirmed that no useful evidence was found that could assist the LAPD’s investigation into the long-standing case. Recent updates from TMZ indicated that no recordings of Simpson were present on the drives — only recordings related to Avelli himself.
Simpson passed away in April 2024. He was acquitted in a highly publicized criminal trial for the murders but was found liable in a civil court case.
This development highlights how ongoing interest in historical cases can sometimes lead to dramatic claims, which may not ultimately hold up under scrutiny. Although the pursuit of justice in such matters can stir excitement, it is essential for investigators and the public alike to rely on tangible evidence rather than sensationalized reports. The clarification from Bloomington PD serves to ground the narrative as more information comes to light.
As the years go by, it’s hopeful to see that the legal system continues to work through these complex issues, allowing for the truth to emerge even if it takes time.
