The popularity of girls’ rugby continues to surge, with New Zealand Under 18 representative Lynda Rabeni Vatuloka emerging as a key player in this movement. Fresh off her participation in the 2025 Global Youth 7s, Vatuloka has experienced the incredible talent and dedication that is flourishing in the women’s game.

According to Vatuloka, the tournament served as a platform not only for showcasing exceptional athletic skills but also for highlighting the strong sense of camaraderie among players from various countries. “There’s so much talent with girls in rugby. Watching teams from Fiji, Australia, and New Zealand shows how much skill, teamwork, and art girls bring to the game. I really hope it continues to grow, and I’d love to see it expand in Fiji as well,” she expressed.

One of the tournament’s standout moments for Vatuloka was the intense pool match against Fiji, characterized by high-pressure play and friendly rivalry. She noted, “Every time you see the Fijians, it’s an intense game with all the offloads. But they’re always cheering, no matter what happens. That support really made the games special.”

As New Zealand advanced to the semi-finals, they demonstrated their prowess by taking a commanding 19-0 lead at halftime against Japan, with an animated crowd, including Fijian fans, enhancing the electric atmosphere. Vatuloka recalled a humorous moment during the match when a voice from the stands encouraged a teammate, saying, “If you’re tired, don’t be tired, Laura.” This exemplified the strong bonds formed during the tournament, transcending competition.

For Vatuloka, the event reaffirmed her belief in the future of girls’ rugby, noting that it is indeed in capable hands. Brightening the overall narrative, both the New Zealand girls’ and boys’ under 18 teams claimed victory in the tournament, marking a significant achievement for the nation and further solidifying the potential of young athletes in the sport. This encouraging trend reflects the growing recognition and support for girls’ rugby on a global scale, promising an even brighter future for the sport.
