NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch has chosen to continue in her role under Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s administration, highlighting a willingness to collaborate despite notable differences in their views on policing. Tisch confirmed her decision in a Wednesday email to NYPD officers, emphasizing that while she and Mamdani may not align on every issue, they share essential priorities such as public safety and crime reduction.

“In those discussions, you can trust that I will be a fierce advocate for you and for this department,” Tisch assured, reinforcing her commitment to the police force. Her message came just before Mamdani, a democratic socialist slated to take office on January 1, begins implementing his visions for the city, which include keeping the NYPD’s headcount stable and introducing a Department of Community Safety designed to handle certain responsibilities currently managed by the police.

Mamdani’s past remarks advocating for the defunding and dismantling of the NYPD have reclaimed attention, with critics questioning his stance despite his pledges to maintain police funding levels. His proposals, including the abolishment of the Strategic Response Group and gang database, have also faced skepticism from Tisch.

Since her appointment as police commissioner less than a year ago, Tisch has overseen a notable reduction in crime in New York City, reporting the lowest number of shootings since the CompStat era commenced in 1994. She attributes this achievement to a data-driven approach that strategically positions officers in high-violence areas.

Tisch’s continuation as the city’s top cop follows a tumultuous period for the NYPD, marked by a series of leadership changes under Mayor Eric Adams. Her appointment marks a pivotal moment for the department, as she navigates her relationship with Mamdani while ensuring the safety and security of New York City. As both leaders prepare to work together, there remains a cautious optimism for a collaborative approach to policing that balances both public safety and reform initiatives.
