The NYPD is ramping up security for the upcoming Dominican Day Parade on Sunday, implementing a significant increase in police presence following last year’s premature ending due to disturbances, including a slashing incident. This year’s event is set to take place on Sixth Avenue, spanning West 38th to West 55th streets, with Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch announcing an additional 500 officers compared to last year.
In total, a robust force of 957 uniformed officers and 140 traffic agents will oversee the celebration, alongside specialized K9 and drone teams, according to NYPD Chief of Transit Joseph Gulotta. To enhance safety, the parade will begin two hours earlier this year, at 11 a.m.
Last year’s festivities experienced chaos when spectators began jumping barricades, leading to criminal behavior, including a knife attack that left a 65-year-old man injured. Tisch emphasized that such behavior is not representative of the majority of attendees and expressed her commitment to making this year’s event safer. “That was unacceptable, and we will not tolerate it happening again,” she stated.
Reflecting on the previous year’s challenges, Tisch acknowledged that the police staffing was inadequate and has taken actionable steps to rectify this. The police presence will include uniformed officers stationed along the route and traffic agents at key intersections, enhanced by personnel from various specialized units.
As of now, there are no credible threats or indications of gang-related violence associated with the parade. The NYPD remains vigilant in ensuring that the celebration is secure, with comprehensive coverage planned throughout the event.
Beginning at 10 a.m., Sixth Avenue will be closed to traffic, with specific pedestrian crossing points designated. The celebration seeks to bring together the community in a spirit of culture and unity while maintaining safety as a top priority.
