NYC’s Dining Secrets: Why Reservations Are Almost Impossible to Score

Securing a reservation at popular restaurants in New York City has become increasingly difficult, with many diners facing significant challenges in the last three years. The trendiest eateries have shifted from being simply hard to access to virtually unattainable for many food enthusiasts.

Joel Montaniel, CEO of the booking platform Sevenrooms, shared insights with Bloomberg, stating, “Some restaurants are just impossible to get into.” He noted that restaurateurs, when asked for tips on securing a reservation, often express that they lack any.

The competitive nature of dinner reservations reached a tipping point last month when New York’s state legislature voted to prohibit third-party booking sites like Appointment Trader. These platforms allowed users to sell restaurant bookings for exorbitant prices, sometimes exceeding $200, echoing practices typically associated with concert and sports ticket scalping.

Melissa Fleischut, President & CEO of the New York State Restaurant Association, hailed the legislation as a significant win for the hospitality sector, aimed at lowering competition for reservations and shielding restaurants from costly cancellations.

Despite these legislative efforts, the demand for trendy and luxurious dining experiences persists, outstripping availability. Travel advisor Jaclyn Sienna India observed, “Post-COVID, it’s clear that everything is fully booked – planes, restaurants, hotels.” She highlighted the complexity of securing dining arrangements in such an environment.

With over 16 years in the industry, India runs Sienna Charles, a concierge service catering to the wealthy, including high-profile clients like George W. Bush and Mariah Carey. She stresses that successful access to sought-after restaurants hinges on understanding customer desires and cultivating strong relationships with dining establishments.

According to India, the dining landscape has shifted markedly, with fewer clients seeking traditional fine dining experiences. “People have moved away from tasting menus,” she explained, noting a growing preference for trendy venues where the experience often becomes a status symbol, overshadowing the meal itself.
