New York City Police Commissioner Edward Caban has announced his resignation, effective Friday, amid a federal investigation into potential corruption in the city’s government. This confirmation came from both Caban and his attorneys, following a letter sent to City Hall.

Federal authorities recently seized cellphones belonging to Caban and other NYPD officials as part of the ongoing inquiry. However, Caban’s attorneys stated that he is “not a target of any investigation” by the Southern District of New York and expressed his commitment to cooperating fully with the government.

In his resignation statement, Caban emphasized his dedication to the NYPD and explained that the surrounding distractions made it challenging for him to serve effectively. “My complete focus must be on the NYPD — the Department I profoundly honor and have dedicated my career to serving,” he noted. Caban stressed that he wishes to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the department amidst recent developments.

Mayor Eric Adams accepted Caban’s resignation, appointing former FBI agent Tom Donlon as interim commissioner. Adams praised Caban’s service, highlighting a decline in crime during his tenure.

In addition to Caban, federal agents conducted searches of homes belonging to other top officials, including Deputy Mayor Phil Banks and Schools Chancellor David Banks, as part of their investigation. However, no charges have been filed at this point. The investigation reportedly examines issues surrounding city contracts and regulations affecting bars and clubs.

Adams expressed his surprise at the inquiries into his administration, reinforcing his commitment to lawfulness and cooperation with the investigation. He stated that he is unaware of any wrongdoing by his administration and reiterated the necessity to adhere to the law.

Caban’s career at the NYPD began in 1991, and he rose through the ranks to become the department’s first deputy commissioner in 2022. Following the resignation of former commissioner Keechant Sewell, Caban was appointed as commissioner in July 2023. His departure has raised concerns within the city, with some officials calling for accountability and confidence in the department’s leadership.
