New York City Mayor Eric Adams is preparing to endorse former Governor Andrew Cuomo as they approach the mayoral election scheduled for November. This endorsement represents a significant shift in the political landscape, as Adams has publicly critiqued Cuomo in the past.
Todd Shapiro, a spokesperson for Mayor Adams, confirmed the endorsement in a statement to NBC New York. “As spokesman for Mayor Eric Adams, I can confirm that the Mayor will endorse former Governor Andrew M. Cuomo for mayor and intends to campaign alongside him. The time and locations for their joint appearances are currently being finalized,” Shapiro stated.
Cuomo and Adams, both entrenched in the Democratic Party, initially entered the mayoral race as third-party candidates against Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani, a current state legislator. However, Adams withdrew from the race last month, indicating through a nearly nine-minute video posted on X that he did not see a viable path to victory.
The duo was seen together at a New York Knicks game following Cuomo’s participation in the final mayoral debate, signaling their collaboration. Responding to this endorsement, Mamdani took to X, describing it as “The Art of the Deal,” highlighting his views on the political maneuvering at play.
In a recent interview with “The Reset Talk Show,” Adams hinted at ongoing discussions with Cuomo, stating he was waiting to finalize his decision on endorsing a candidate. Despite their new alliance, Adams has previously expressed his disagreements with Mamdani’s policy proposals and had labeled Cuomo “a snake and a liar” just weeks prior during the campaign.
Mamdani has so far maintained a strong lead in polling, proving to be a formidable opponent. A recent Fox News poll revealed Mamdani with 49% support among registered New York City voters, while Cuomo garnered 28% and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa received 13%. Although Cuomo has made some gains in recent surveys, Mamdani appears to hold a solid double-digit lead, underscoring the competitive dynamics as the election date approaches.
This endorsement and the emerging partnership between Adams and Cuomo suggest a potential reshaping of voter sentiment, while also emphasizing the unpredictability of the upcoming election. As New Yorkers prepare to cast their votes, the stakes for both candidates continue to rise, fostering an atmosphere ripe for change.
