NYC Dining Dilemma: Scoring Reservations Has Never Been Harder!

Dining out in New York City has become increasingly challenging, with securing a reservation at the most sought-after restaurants now more difficult than ever. Over the past three years, many aspiring diners have found it nearly impossible to land a spot at the city’s trendiest eateries.

Joel Montaniel, CEO of the booking platform Sevenrooms, highlighted the issue, sharing with Bloomberg that even seasoned restaurateurs struggle to provide tips for obtaining reservations due to high demand.

The situation has led to drastic measures, such as a recent decision by the New York state legislature to prohibit third-party booking services like Appointment Trader, where users were reselling restaurant reservations for inflated prices, sometimes exceeding $200. This practice, previously associated with concerts and sporting events, has sparked intervention from authorities.

Melissa Fleischut, President and CEO of the New York State Restaurant Association, praised the legislation as a significant triumph for the hospitality sector, aimed at reducing reservation competition and shielding restaurants from costly cancellations.

Despite these legislative efforts, the reality remains that the appetite for trendy and luxurious dining experiences continues to outpace their availability. Travel advisor Jaclyn Sienna India noted, “Post-COVID, everything feels fully booked—flights, restaurants, hotels.”

Having run a concierge and travel planning service for the ultra-wealthy for 16 years, India emphasizes the importance of understanding customer preferences and nurturing relationships with restaurants. She points out a notable shift away from traditional fine dining towards trendy spots that prioritize unique experiences over food quality.

For those still eager to secure a reservation at New York’s most elusive tables, persistence is key, according to Sienna Charles, who provides insights on the toughest restaurants to get into in the city.
