NWSL Free Agency Unleashes Exciting Player Moves for 2026!

The NWSL has officially commenced its 2026 free agency period, initiating on July 1, in accordance with the new collective bargaining agreement established with the NWSL Players Association. Players are now able to negotiate contract terms with teams as they evaluate their options for the upcoming season.

Among those eligible for free agency from the Seattle Reign, thirteen players have been named, including:

– Lauren Barnes
– Ryanne Brown
– Ana-Maria Crnogorčević
– Jess Fishlock
– Hanna Glas
– Angharad James-Turner
– Veronica Latsko
– Julia Lester
– Emily Mason
– Maddie Mercado
– Maddie Prohaska
– Ji So-yun
– Lily Woodham

However, Cassie Miller and Sam Meza were initially set to be on this list; Miller’s option has been exercised for 2026, while Meza has signed a new contract that extends through 2028, ensuring her stay in Seattle for an additional season.

The list largely features veteran players, including Reign stalwarts Jess Fishlock and Lauren Barnes. Four of these players—Fishlock, Angharad James-Turner, and Lily Woodham for Wales, and Ana-Maria Crnogorčević for Switzerland—are currently participating in the UEFA Women’s EURO. It remains uncertain whether Woodham will continue with the Reign after her international commitments.

While the players’ names appear on the free agency list, it does not guarantee they will depart from the Reign next season. The new CBA allows these athletes ample time to weigh their prospects, engage in discussions with their club, and investigate opportunities across other teams within the NWSL and other leagues.

In addition to the Reign players, notable names on the 2026 free agency list include Sophia Wilson from the Portland Thorns, Trinity Rodman of the Washington Spirit, Midge Purce from Gotham, as well as Bia Zaneratto and Lo’eau LaBonta from Kansas City.

The Reign’s focus on securing long-term contracts with younger talent over the past couple of years reflects a strategic commitment to the team’s future. It has shown early rewards, with players such as Emeri Adames and Maddie Dahlien currently leading in goals. However, this strategy might lead to increased turnover among veteran players, suggesting a phase of transition within the team.

As fans look ahead, they can remain hopeful that this blend of veterans and emerging talent will create a dynamic and competitive squad for the seasons to come.
