Nurse’s Journey: How Sports Change Lives in Edmonton

Darnell Nurse, the Edmonton Oilers’ nominee for the 2024-25 King Clancy Memorial Trophy, reflects on the profound influence sports can have in shaping communities, especially through the Free Play for Kids charity. This organization is dedicated to providing underprivileged youth in Edmonton with free access to sports programs, fostering a safe, inclusive environment where all kids can thrive.

Nurse shared that his inspiration comes from his father’s journey as an immigrant from Trinidad to Canada. His father, Richard, faced the challenges of adapting to a new country, marking a significant transition at just seven years old. He found solace and connection through sports, initially discovering hockey, which led to numerous friendships and ultimately a career in the Canadian Football League.

Nurse is proud to have collaborated with Free Play since 2021, where they launched the “Captain of the Week” initiative. This program highlights a student each week from the 24 elementary schools involved in Free Play, recognizing their leadership and inviting them to attend an Oilers game as a special guest. Nurse also actively participates in activities with the kids, including floor hockey games, and is continually inspired by their resilience and creativity.

The work done by Free Play not only empowers children by giving them access to sports but also instills values of leadership and community, echoing the experiences that shaped Nurse’s life. His commitment to youth involvement and the joy he derives from these interactions underscore the positive impact that sports and community initiatives can have on individual lives and society as a whole.
