The Denver Nuggets are navigating the challenges of the Western Conference without their star players Nikola Jokic and Cameron Johnson, both sidelined by knee injuries. Recently, NBA insider Marc Stein provided an optimistic update on their potential return timeline. According to Stein, fans might expect to see both players back on the court in early February.

Stein indicated that their recovery progress is somewhat aligned, suggesting that early February could be the earliest realistic timeframe for their return. He noted, “Early February increasingly looks like it could be the soonest that Nikola Jokic and Cam Johnson, both felled by recent knee injuries, can realistically return to the Nuggets’ lineup.”

Jokic’s injury occurred on December 29 during a game against the Miami Heat, when his foot was accidentally stepped on by teammate Spencer Jones, leading to a hyperextension of his knee. Johnson, on the other hand, tweaked his knee a week prior against the Dallas Mavericks, resulting in a diagnosis of a bone bruise along with a hyperextension.

Following his injury, Jokic was initially projected to return within four weeks, aiming for a tentative comeback around January 26. However, due to the careful approach suggested by Stein, the Nuggets are proceeding with caution to ensure his full recovery. Johnson has a similar recovery timeline, estimated between four to six weeks, which brings his target return closer to February.

Despite the absence of their key starters, the Nuggets have performed admirably, posting a record of 4-3 since Jokic’s injury. Victories against formidable teams, including the Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers, highlight the resilience and determination of players like Jamal Murray and the rest of the Nuggets’ roster.

Coach David Adelman provided an update on Jokic’s recovery before a recent game, emphasizing the day-to-day nature of his rehabilitation. Adelman noted that Jokic is making progress, yet will require time to adjust given his history of durability. “It’s day-to-day with the effort-level stuff,” Adelman explained. “He’s antsy. He’s never been hurt… The worst part is just sitting around.”

As Jokic and Johnson work towards their return, the Nuggets’ ability to remain competitive in a loaded Western Conference is promising. Their potential comeback in early February could provide a significant boost, offering hope for the rest of the season and the team’s aspirations for playoff success.
