The annual holiday celebration at the Boys and Girls Club brought festive cheer to local children, thanks in part to the Denver Nuggets. Attendees enjoyed a joyful evening filled with crafts, cookies, and visits from the Nuggets cheerleaders, team mascot Rocky, and the Nuggets’ public address announcer Kyle Speller.
Kyle Speller, who has been a part of the Nuggets organization for two decades, shared his motivation for participating, reflecting on his own childhood experiences. Growing up in a single-parent home, he credits after-school programs for guiding him to where he is today. “It’s all about making an impact in any way possible,” he emphasized, highlighting the significance of connecting with young people.
Speller noted that while some of the kids might never see a game live, the opportunity to engage with their favorite team can ignite hope and inspiration. “You never know what it could mean for them,” he remarked, expressing the hope that these interactions motivate children to aspire for great things.
Children at the club were filled with excitement during the event. Skyla, one of the attendees, expressed her joy in making cheers with friends, while her brother, donned in a Jamal Murray jersey, eagerly awaited the chance to meet the cheerleaders and Rocky.
Rachel Rooney, the Senior Director of Philanthropy for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Denver, highlighted the importance of community support. With over 10,000 children served in 27 clubs, the need for holiday donations has become more pressing this year. “We have enough toys to cover about 75% of our clubs, but we could use more to ensure every child receives gifts,” she explained, emphasizing the critical role that donations play in making the holidays special for children.
As laughter echoed and games were played, Speller encouraged the children by reminding them of their inherent potential. “No matter what their present circumstances are, they have the ability to create a different future,” he said, motivating them to recognize their uniqueness and strive for success.
The Boys and Girls Club continues to accept toy donations until Christmas Eve to help bring joy to more children during this festive season.
This heartwarming story showcases the profound impact that community events can have on young lives, underscoring the importance of support and involvement. By coming together to uplift each other, we can ensure that every child experiences the warmth of the holiday season.
